Gender and the Media
This article talks about gender in the media and how women are underrepresented. It states that when women are seen in the media it is stereotyped. A study found that males appeared three times the amount as females in top-grossing films. Women are stereotyped as mothers or in a committed relationship. The big stereotype is also that women are meant to be thin and that is the ideal women.

Using the Law to Crack the Glass Ceiling
This article is from London and it is stating how the German Parliament rejected something that stated that large companies need to reserve 20% of board seats for women. However, the European governments adopted a gender equality legislation. A lot of people are angry that these laws are not in place. The European Commission proposed that legal quotas should now be adopted throughout the 27-member bloc. Some governments held out, insisting that any reforms should be left up to national parliaments. The commission revised the plan to favor the "underrepresented gender."

This article is telling us about how the focus is always on women going into "male jobs" and how we can also see that nowadays men are entering a lot of "pink-collar" jobs. It is stating that even though men are entering "pink-collar" jobs and women are entering "male jobs" that doesn't mean that the workplace is entering into a form of equality. The men are still dominating and even in the "female jobs" they are earning more money and advancing much quicker.

Successful Women in the Workforce: Is it Really All or Nothing?
This article that I read talked about Erin Callan's point of view on the situation of women in the workforce. Her point of view was different from Sandberg's in that she didn't blame everything so much on the women as she did on the men. She was saying that women need to look before they lean in and that they also need a man who is willing to be stay at home and take care of the children.

An NFL Team Reportedly Asked A Player If He 'Likes Girls' At The Combine
College football players have interviews with different NFL teams along with doing a variety of conditioning and strength drills. One college player, Nick Kasa, a tight end from Colorado told hosts that in the interviews the coaches asked questions meant to throw you off guard or get into your mind a little bit. Some of those questions included "Do you have a girlfriend?" or "Do you like girls?" Those types of questions should not be asked in interviews because a players sexual orientation has nothing to do with how they can play.

Idaho girl creates controversy by joining boys' lacrosse team
In Idaho, Sara Maras attends Borah High and is on the cheerleading squad. But her being a cheerleader isn't all that there is to Sara. She is very aggressive when it comes to sports. At her old school Sara played lacrosse and they played by the boys' rules, which was fine for her since there was more contact involved. When she moved to her new school she signed up to try out for the girls' lacrosse team and found it to be boring and not for her. She contacted the boys' coach and joined their team. The boys were very accepting of Sara and not verbalized any discomfort about her being on the team. The discomfort came from the parents. The board voted 18-4 that Sara was not to play on the team, her petition failed. But her coach sat the team down and asked the team if they would be willing to forfeit the season just to have Sara be apart of their team. All of the boys were in favor of keeping Sara.

This article is about how men and women view the world differently. Researchers at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom did an experiment with a variety of men and women to track where their viewpoint went when looking at an image. They found that most of the time men and women looked at different spots on the image. They were able to tell whether or not a participant was female just by seeing where their eyes focused. Most of the time women looked away or below object of interest, especially if they were potent. Surprisingly, most of the time the women looked for at women in a picture of a couple than men did. When both looked at the female figure of the image, me focused more on the face and women on the body. Researchers believe this is because women are looking for faults in another women.

Emphatic Femininity
In case you were curious about this whole human "Barbie" concept from this morning's class, here is an article about a girl who had surgery to look like a life size Barbie. It is not the same girl I was thinking of when I mentioned it but still a good article.
Is it possible to look like Barbie?

I chose this article from the New York Times about moms taking the role of staying at home because it goes along with how dads mostly go to work while their wives stay home and look after the house holds. Click here

Cali Bans "Cure" Therapy
In reference to our discussion on the article "What's So Bad About a Boy who Wants to Wear a Dress?", California became the first state to officially ban what it called "Cure" Therapy. The belief behind this therapy, and you might remember that one of the parents in the article actually had their son do this, is that acting homosexual or in a way unbecoming of one's assigned gender can be "cured" through talking to a therapist.

This article talks about BSA and how they are moving towards allowing gay boys to become scouts or scout leaders. There is much talk about the pros and cons that this decision could face. It would promote equality and give more children the opportunity the join the Boy Scouts. However, the BSA could lose many of it's supporters, such as the Souther Baptist churches, because they are anti-gay.

The Fortune 500 list has more female CEO's than ever before. In 2011 there were 12 female CEO's and now in 2012 there is a record of 18. Even though there is a new record of female CEO's they still only run 3.6% of the Fortune 500 companies. Women are gaining some power but not as much as some may deserve.
